How to play Waffle Words

Waffle Words is a free word puzzle. Six five-letter words are hidden in a waffle-shaped grid, three across and three down, and their letters have been shuffled. Swap tiles until every word is back.

  1. Choose a mode. Unlimited gives you a fresh puzzle whenever you want one. Daily gives everyone the same puzzle, once a day.
  2. Pick a difficulty. Open Settings and choose Easy with 20 swaps, Medium with 15 swaps, or Hard with 12 swaps.
  3. Select a tile. Tap a letter tile to select it, or press and drag it. Green tiles are already correct and cannot move.
  4. Swap it with another tile. Tap a second tile, or drop the dragged tile on it, and the two letters trade places. Each swap uses one of your swaps.
  5. Read the colors. Green means the letter is in the right spot. Yellow means it belongs somewhere else in that row or column. Plain tiles are not needed in that word.
  6. Rebuild all six words. Put every letter back to finish. Solve in 10 swaps for five stars, and lose a star for each extra swap.

Frequently asked questions

What is Waffle Words?

Waffle Words is a free word puzzle. Six five-letter words are hidden in a waffle-shaped grid, three across and three down, and the letters are shuffled. You swap tiles to put every word back.

How many swaps do I get?

It depends on the difficulty you choose in Settings: Easy gives 20 swaps, Medium gives 15 and Hard gives 12. Every puzzle can be solved in 10 swaps or fewer.

What do the green and yellow tiles mean?

A green tile is in the correct position and stays locked. A yellow tile has a letter that belongs in that row or column, but in a different spot. A plain tile holds a letter that is not needed there.

What is the difference between Unlimited and Daily?

Unlimited is the default. You can play as many puzzles as you like and start a new one at any time. Daily gives all players the same puzzle for the day, and a new one appears at midnight your local time.

How do stars work?

Solve a puzzle in 10 swaps for five stars. Each extra swap costs one star, and a solved puzzle always earns at least one star.

Is there a colorblind mode?

Yes. Open Settings and turn on Colorblind mode. Tiles change to blue and orange, and each also gets a shape, a filled dot for the right spot and a ring for the right word, so color is never the only signal.

Can I switch to a light theme?

Yes. The game opens in dark theme. In Settings you can choose Light or Auto, which follows your device.

Does Waffle Words work on a phone?

Yes. The board scales to any screen from small phones to wide desktop monitors. You can tap or drag tiles, and keyboard users can move between tiles with the arrow keys. You can also install it to your home screen and play offline.

Are hints and undo available?

Yes. A hint places one letter correctly and costs a swap. You get three hints per puzzle on Easy and Medium, and one on Hard. Undo takes back your last swap and returns it to you.

Can I share my result?

Yes. When you finish a puzzle, choose Share result to send it with the native share sheet, copy it, or post it to X, Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook or Reddit.

Is Waffle Words free, and is my progress saved?

It is free to play. Your settings, statistics and the puzzle in progress are saved in your browser on your own device.

Waffle Words is free to play in your browser on phone, tablet and desktop. Your settings and statistics stay on your device.
